The Importance of Listening

As a musician, the most important aspect of learning is listening...

Imagine trying to learn French without ever listening to it being spoken. Trying to learn music without ever listening to music (let alone the pieces you're learning) is like trying to learn a language entirely from a book. It will certainly give you a sub-optimal result...


Listening to the pieces you're learning will allow you to be more aware of any mistakes in your practice, which will better allow you to fix them.

Listening to the pieces you're learning will help you to decide on the more nebulous aspects of music, such as phrasing.

Listening to music (particularly cello music) will give you ideas about sound qualities (such as vibrato shaping, etc) which you may not be aware of.


Listening to music is also just really pleasant... Why are you learning if you don't like music?!
